Abstract

Water chemistry data of the Küçükçekmece Lake water from 1985, 1989 and 1995 are compared to the data from February 1997 and August 1997. Samples collected in various locations of the Küçükçekmece Lake at depths of 0.5 m, 5 m, 10 m, and 15 m and at stream mouths during February 1997 and August 1997  were analyzed by ICPMS-200 to determine heavy metal concentrations (Hg, Cd, Pb, As, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn, Se, Ba, Al and U). It is determined that there exist Hg and U (heavy metal contamination) in the one numbered northern region and Pb, Cu and Se in the three numbered southern region of the Küçükçekmece Lake. Besides, stream waters have been determined to have heavy metal concentrations; Hg, Se and U that in the Ispartakule stream mouth; and Hg, Cu and Se in the  Sazlý stream mouth; Cu, Se and U and in the Nakkaþ stream mouth. When the February 1997 analysis results and August 1997 analysis result were compared, it has been determined that the amounts As, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ba and Fe heavy metals in the lake are decreased and Pb, Ni, Zn and Se are increased since February 1997. As the changes of heavy metal contains as per seasonal conditions have been considered, it has been determined that water of the Küçükçekmece Lake has become contaminated to the level of unusualibility by the effects of especially domestic waste, dirty industrial and house water and water – rock interaction.
